The driver, 22, was part of a line of more than six camouflage-covered New York National Guard vehicles making a left turn from Centre St. onto Canal at 1:24 p.m. But when the traffic light changed to red, the Guardsman kept on barreling through the intersection, striking an Asian senior citizen, witnesses said.

“Six trucks went up in front and then this guy tried to make it” through the light, said Armando Baez, 35

“It’s the driver’s fault,” Baez said. “He tried to catch up and that’s when he hit him.”

Witnesses said the elderly man was walking with a woman from the north side of Canal St. to the south when he was hit.

“The truck was flying through the light,” said Thomas, a vendor at the intersection who declined to give his surname. “(The victim) had blood coming out of his mouth and nose. His leg was up under the truck.”
