Republicans Oppose Fair Pay For Women “because it’s about freedom” ‹ I Acknowledge Class Warfare Exists:

'via Blog this'When Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) was asked why he was against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay for Women Act … here was his response:
“I believe in free enterprise. I don’t think the government should be telling people what you pay and what you don’t pay.  I think it’s about freedom.  If somebody wants to hire somebody and they agree on a salary, that’s fine, however it wants to work. So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble.”
Just consider this …
  • The very first bill Obama presented ensured women would be able to go to court for pay discrimination.  173 House Republicans voted against that bill and only 3 voted for it (source).
  • Then when the Democrats proposed the Paycheck Fairness Act in 2011.  Every single Republican voted against it (source).
  • Women on average earn $.77 for every $1.00 a man earns.
  • African American women earn $.64 for every $1.00 a man earns.
  • Latina women earn $.56 for every $1.00 a man earns.
So when Todd Akin says he’s against requiring employers not to discriminate against women by paying them less for the same job – the only difference between him and the rest of his party is that he has enough integrity to say what he believes in.  Now – it goes without saying that I disagree with him to the 1000th degree, but I would rather have an honest debate about what both parties really stand for.
As Akin said …. let’s go back to his actual quote:
I don’t think the government should be telling people what you pay and what you don’t pay.  I think it’s about freedom.  If somebody wants to hire somebody and they agree on a salary, that’s fine, however it wants to work.
Now – not only does he disagree with the government saying whether or not employers can discriminate against women for being women … he doesn’t agree with the notion of a minimum wage.  He doesn’t agree that it should be illegal for employers to turn away blacks or hispanics because of their race.  He doesn’t believe it should be illegal to turn away pregnant women because they’re pregnant or Muslims because of their religion or gays because of their sexual orientation or a 60 year old woman because she’s a senior.  In Todd Akin’s world … he’s the MAINSTREAM Republican.
The only difference is that he doesn’t want to play politics and he wants to shoot straight (or he’s just really, really stupid).  I don’t think he’s stupid at all.  I think he is the perfect poster child for what the Republican party has become.  Meanwhile – when asked about whether or not he supports fair pay for women … the Romney response was “we’ll get back to you”.  I’m not kidding – listen to them say it HERE.
And I’m so tired of hearing conservatives use “freedom” as their defense for everything that they think is wrong with the world.  They’re against Almond Joy because they want more freedom.  They’re against addition and subtraction because of their love for freedom
