Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office today identified a body found floating in the Detroit River as Kent Morton, a painter who fell into the water while performing work on the Ambassador Bridge in January.
The U.S. Coast Guard said Friday the body was recovered at the boat docks at Historic Fort Wayne near Zug Island.
Morton, 28, of Garden City fell from scaffolding under the bridge where he was painting its ironwork. Searches had failed to find his body.
Morton had been tightening a cable when the tension caused it to snap, according to his brother, Shane Morton.
Kent Morton's employer, Seaway Painting, has a history of occupational safety violations, according to state officials. It was unclear at the time of the accident whether Morton's crew had lifejackets, a buoy and a rescue boat, although all are required, a MIOSHA official told the Free Press at the time of the accident. MIOSHA officials said then that their investigation of the incident would take months.
