So, as best I can tell, pulling the dogs legs apart works sometimes, but is very foolish and risky:
Also, in terms of protecting yourself from a dog attack; holding your ground then pulling a dogs' front legs sharply apart (as they jump at you) then inflicting a blow to the chest cavity (with the knee usually) incapacitates the animal and is potentially fatal. So I've been told anyway.
If you're unfortunate enough to be attacked by one of these things and you're fortunate enough to get both hands free, grab the dogs front wrists or front knees (for want of a better word) and pull them apart with all your strength. This will likely kill the dog. At the least it will completely disable it.

Erm? No! Old wives tale. What do you think the dog's teeth are doing while you try to do that? You've just put your face and throat on offer.

What you did with the GSD is not "holding your ground then pulling a dogs' front legs sharply apart". I'm glad you were'nt injured.
Trying to pull the legs apart will do nothing to the dog but will bring it in closer to your head. Part of my duties for the last 37 years has been to advise people on dealing with dog attacks.
I've been in a similar position before so it's not total hearsay. An alsation cross attacked me at an open air party many years ago. In this instance grabbing the front paws prevented the dogs teeth getting any closer than my fingers and gave me chance to kick its back legs away before the drunken owner got it under control.
My reaction was instinctual and it was due to this incident that the conversation on 'how to kill a dog' came about. It isn't something I would ever do- the thought of killing anything is morally repugnant to me, but the 'front leg hold' helped me out on that occassion.
Not saying you're wrong- probably is an old wives tale, but then again- aren't those methods sometimes based in fact?
Toni- should a finger be licked for lubrication prior to insertion?
YES ........IF YOU ARE ATTACKED BY A DOG....... STICK YOUR FINGER UP ITS BACKSIDE.....OKAY ITS NOT NICE , BUT IT WORKS !!!
