In West Haven a few weeks later, two pit bulls were euthanized after they escaped from a room and killed an unattended toddler. Earlier this month, in Ansonia, a police officer killed a deaf pit bull dead that he said was charging him. In Waterbury last week, a police officer killed a pit bull that had escaped a backyard cage and attacked a woman.
They're landing in the city's animal shelter more every year. In 2008, of the 1,054 dogs that came to the Evergreen Terrace facility, 381 of them were pit bulls, or 36 percent. If the current fiscal year keeps pace, 606 pit bulls out of 1,140 total dogs will have arrived in the shelter by July, or 53 percent. While most breeds get adopted relatively quickly, pit bulls can linger indefinitely. One pit bull named Spencer, which doesn't interact well with animals but is fine with people, the shelter staff say, has been awaiting an adoption since September 2010.
Pit bulls are strong, stubborn and not well-suited to first-time dog owners, Howard says. But they're also a loyal dog and overwhelmingly friendly. It's poor breeding and ownership habits that lend them a bad name.
