Eatery update: Bonanno expanding restaurant empire
Published December 25, 2008 at 7 p.m.
* Frank Bonanno (Mizuna, Luca D'Italia and Osteria Marco) is set to expand his restaurant empire on Dec. 30, when he unearths Bones (301 E. Seventh Ave.), a tiny Asian joint a wet noodle's toss from both Mizuna and Luca. The restaurant, open daily from 5 p.m. (lunch will start in March), will serve everything from suckling pig steamed buns and roasted bone marrow to duck confit eggrolls, ramen noodles with poached lobster, edamame beans and miso and drunken noodles brimming with locally culled vegetables. Nothing on the menu exceeds $16, which means you'll have plenty of cash left over to sample the Asian-inspired Blood and Bones cocktail concocted with kaffir lime leaves, Sriracha sauce, sambal and Skyy vodka. Belly up!
* There are all sorts of reasons why I'd just as soon dismiss the month of January, not the least of which is the ridiculous notion of making New Year's resolutions, which I inevitably can't (won't) keep. But I'm inclined to make an exception to my rule to take advantage of Rioja's (1431 Larimer St.) "Sip and Snacks" series, which runs every Tuesday night throughout the month I'd rather forget. Stop by after 5 p.m. and you can sip four wines paired with the same number of bite-size noshes for $15 per person. Each week features a different wine theme: Jan. 6 is all about great bangs for the buck; Jan. 13 uncorks the wines of Spain; Jan. 20 pays homage to American wines; and on Jan. 27, you can usher in February with bubbles. * On Jan. 5, Frasca Food and Wine (1738 Pearl St., Boulder) is hosting a four-course wine dinner to kick off the new year. While the restaurant's Monday night dinner series are always a huge hit, this one in particular is creating a lot of buzz, thanks to the featured guest of honor, Philadelphia-based chef Marc Vetri. He's racked up numerous accolades, including a James Beard Award for Best Mid-Atlantic Chef and a Best New Chef title from Food & Wine magazine. The dinner will include dishes from Vetri's recently released cookbook, Il Viaggio de Vetri, wines from Frasca master sommelier Bobby Stuckey and a signed copy of Vetri's book for $140 per person. Reservations are available throughout the evening. Call 303-442-6966.
* Alec Schuler, formerly of Boulder's L'Atelier and Niwot's Treppeda's Italian Ristorante, is gearing up for the grand opening of his own restaurant, Arugula Bar e Ristorante at 2785 Iris Ave., also in Boulder. Slated for an early February unveiling, Arugula will serve lunch Monday-Friday and dinner Monday-Saturday. The affordable menu will focus on Northern Italian cuisine with an emphasis on simple, natural and local ingredients, many procured from Colorado ranchers, suppliers and purveyors.
