When America's leaders in organized crime formed the Commission in 1931, Joseph Bonanno was named as the head of one of the five ruling families. He was only 26 years old. He led the Brooklyn-based Bonanno crime family for more than three decades before losing power in the 1960s, reputedly for trying to become the boss of bosses through plans to assassinate his rivals, including Carlo Gambino and Thomas Lucchese. Neither man was killed, but when a confidant ratted out his plan for power, a feud known as the "Banana War" broke out. Despite alleged ties to drugs, prostitution and murder, he was never convicted of anything more serious than obstructing justice. Bonanno died of heart failure at the age of 97 in 2002.
