Criticism
Co-Founder Alan Smidt filed a lawsuit against Harbor Freight Tools and his son Eric Smidt in response to the replacement of most of the company's legacy management team following the 2008 economic downturn. The lawsuit was settled in April 2001. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.[5]
Smidt is among Los Angeles's most highly respected collectors of modern art and serves on the boards of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Portland Art Museum.[6] He is reported to own the former Marvin Davis estate, which was on the Forbes list of most expensive houses in 2004, in Beverly Hills.[7] The 13-bedroom, 12-bath home has two swimming pools and a tennis court. It is on 10 acres of land and has 25,000 sq. feet of living space. The home was built in 1955 and has undergone many renovations. It was purchased by Smidt for close to $50 million. Property taxes are very close to half a million annually. Smidt also owns a Malibu beach house[8], and Manhattan Apartment[9]
Through his charity, Smidt Family Foundation, Smidt donates thousands of dollars to the University of Southern California,[10] and Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Smidt is among Los Angeles's most well known democrats having served as host to multiple fundraiser dinners for both Bill and Hillary Clinton.[11] He is a friend of Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa, most recently donating money to help pay down the Mayor's ethics fines[12]. Smidt is passionate and accomplished pilot. He is one of only a handful of people qualified to pilot his own Gulfstream.[13]

Harbor Freight Tools USA, Inc. Employer Reviews
They used to pay well. Now not so much.
Pros: health insurance
I have worked many retail management jobs and this was one of the worst. They expect an awful lot from you, and up until last year they would throw more and more money at you to keep you motivated. Last year they decided to change the bonus structure which dramatically reduced the bring home pay. You work a ton of hours, weekends, nights, etc. Your – more...
fun
Pros: good enviroment nice people
Cons: no benefits
talkative and fun
communication skills, customer service
great managers
the hardest part was leaving
greatest part was coming in and just happy to be there

Meh
Pros: good benefits for full time
Cons: corporate bs
It is a decent place to work. Full time has good benefits, but part time has 0 benefits. Technology is years behind. When you get to help customers, it is a satisfying experience. But as my district manager said, "Customer service is not Harbor Freight's business model."
Decent company
Good company but the employees were very unprofessional. The company itself generated very good and consistent business, but the emlpoyess' were constantly slacking-off, and not maintaining a professional appearance for the company.
Fast pace
Overall great place to work. Wish benifits were more obtainable.
They can't be serious. Lack of leadership - lack of concern about associates - it's all about the money.
Pros: they're constantly hiring.
Cons: inability to live on $8 for less than 20 hours a week for most employees, total lack of concern for employees by all levels of management, forced sales of "insurance" on products and "club memberships" often leads to dismissal.
The hardest part about working for HFT is the complete money-centered attitude that filters down from corporate. Sales are down? Cut the store hours. Don't consider that sales are down because the company doesn't want to pay for insurance benefits for employees so they ruthlessly cut hours to the retail stores, leaving them short-staffed with far too – more...
Enjoy training and protecting companys assets
Pros: people and growing a new company
Cons: airports
I learned and grew alot through the twenty-one years with HFT
It' ok
Pros: commision
Cons: management
The managers are horrible. No team work. No hours. Store manager works whenever he feels like it. You never see him.
Productive, fun, family oriented
Pros: free lunches, raffles, fun people to work with, dependable
Cons: no tuition reimbursement
Learned new programs such as Oracle. Co-workers willing to help. Needed more in depth training. The work hours were great.
Trying and competitive
Pros: the employees and customers are great
Cons: management was not helpful
A typical day at harbor freight tools consisted of no communication and direction. A busy store yet part of management was communiative and always doing the same thing
it was a great job
Pros: i learned how how to drive a fork lift, and got to use hundreds of different tools
began the day unloading trucks checking in inventory, helping customers,I liked working with customers listening to there stories about the projects they were working on and about life in general
Positive workplace and helpful colleagues.
Pros: incentives to customer signups to store membership, mailing list.
Cons: need more hours available, which should be fixed soon.
Typically I go there, clock-in and put away my things in my personal locker. Moveover, I work the register and address customer inquisitions. Furthermore, since I have been there all my questions and concerns are addressed. Lastly, I like my managers and co-workers because they are always so eager to help being that I am fairly new. The most enjoyable – more...

Nice place to work and good benefits and have opportunity for advancement.
Good Workplace
A typical day at work would be alt of interaction with different people. I learned how to do data entry, process credit and debit cards. My coworkers were great very friendly and outgoing never had any problems with anyone. The hardest part of the job was dealing with the rude customers but I always got thru it with patiencce and politeness. To me every – more...
It's Retail
Pros: commissioned warranties sales
Cons: no sales no hours
Its retail. Some good days some bad.
Good place to work on sales pitching.
Good place to work on sales pitching.
Nice area
Harbor Freight had a good location and busy work hours. Great customers.
Fun Work Place And Great People!
A Great Job But Not Enough Hours! Need Another Part Time Job Or A Full Time!
No consistency and an overall horrible place to work.
Pros: good paid time off
Cons: never being allowed to take said paid time off, no conistency... to many to list.
I worked there for a little over a year. I was let go due to low ITC sales. ITC is a program where you should sale coupons to customers who are already getting coupons for free, and then convince them the free coupons are not good enough, they need the subscription coupons. The problem is most of the time the ITC coupons are comparable to the newspaper – more...
company is not a rewarding place to be at all.
Pros: customers, hours, tools
Cons: hourly pay, always late on giving reviews, management has lack of respect or know how.
I really enjoyed working there. Only because of the customers and the products they came in to buy. Harbor Freight is not a rewarding company to work for and they have no useable benefits. Local store has a sad team of managers, which is not beneficial for customer loyality, or ambition of any other employees.
Continous change creates confusion
Pros: fair pay
Cons: it's retail, you work all the time.
Growing pains... one week one way is the best way, next week the other way. Top mgmnt need to make their minds up quickly and stick to it instead of changing it. It is busy, hard and dirty work. Don't do it if you don't like to lift and get dirty.
