Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-tip | The Sideshow - Yahoo! News:

'via Blog this'"An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.)
Welch, who snapped a photo of the bill from a fellow server and uploaded to Reddit, defended her right to post the receipt. "I thought the note was insulting, but also comical," she told Consumerist.com. "And I thought other users would find it entertaining.”
Bell, a pastor at Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries Church, was not amused, and she called Welch's manager to complain.
“[It was] a lapse in my character and judgment,” Bell told the Smoking Gun, adding she did not expect her easily recognizable signature would be, as her friend informed her, “all over Yahoo. You went viral!”
“My heart is really broken,” Bell added. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”
A spokesman for Applebee’s said it apologized to Bell for violating her "right to privacy" and confirmed that Welch “is no longer employed by the franchise."
Welch was surprised that Applebee's fired her, "especially because there was nothing specific in the employee handbook admonishing this behavior."
"I had no intention of starting a witch hunt or hurting anyone. I just wanted to share a picture I found interesting," she said. “I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty and blistered on a good day. And after all that, I can be fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”
Welch also isn't buying Bell's embarrassment. “If this person wrote the note, obviously they wanted it seen by someone," she said. “I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man used as reasoning.""

(And they pastor gave NO tip, not the 18 percent auto tip of six something, and not even ten percent. What a jerk.)

Senate Bill 1759 was approved 6-2 by the state’s Senate Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens Committee last week. The bill, sponsored by Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D – Bergen) and Senator Joseph Vitale (D – Middlesex), would place a greater burden on parents to clarify a “valid reason” for not wanting their kids vaccinated. It would define and further restrict what the definition of a valid reason is, limiting options for opting out.
For example, parents would no longer be able to claim concerns about the safety of vaccines. A parent having a legitimate health concern over vaccine adjuvants and chemicals negatively impacting their child, potentially forever, would no longer count under the new law. Senator Vitale was quoted at the hearing as saying, “We cannot allow widespread exemption from immunization based on fear and false science.”

New Jersey, which allows for both medical and religious exemptions, would also require physician documentation “indicating that the vaccine is medically contraindicated for a specific period of time.”
The bill was supposedly drawn up due to a whooping cough outbreak in addition to a rise in parents claiming exemptions throughout the state in recent years. However, as reported previously by Natural News, research released earlier this year showed strong evidence that whooping cough outbreaks among vaccinated children were actually higher than in unvaccinated children.
In addition, Big Pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) admitted the company’s whooping cough vaccine had never been tested for long-term efficacy, and that the shot does not provide long-term protection against the illness. It should be noted that a single injection of GSK’s Boostrix vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough) would dose the average 11-year-old with 100 micrograms of formaldehyde and 400 micrograms of the heavy metal aluminum according to the National Vaccine Information Center.
Placing further burden on parents who want to opt out of vaccinations is a thinly veiled intimidation tactic states are now utilizing to dissuade parents from exempting their child(ren) from vaccinations. Like similar legislation that passed in Washington and that is in the process of passing in California, this bill serves only to further harm parental rights and perpetuate the idea that it is the state, and not parents, that knows what is best for a child.

Many are questioning the vague wording of the bill, wondering if it could go as far as prohibiting birth control. The main fear associated with this bill is that victims of rape will be forced to give birth to their rapists’ children, whether they wish to do so or not. The possibilities of what are illegal under this bill are posing many questions, such as: Will doctors be legally allowed to perform in-vitro fertilization? What if a pregnant woman experiences life threatening complications? Questions like these have not been addressed in the wording of this act, which is scheduled to become effective November 2012.

History of Tennessee

History of Tennessee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

'via Blog this'In the early years of settlement, planters brought slaves with them from Kentucky and Virginia. Enslaved African Americans were first concentrated in Middle Tennessee, where planters developed mixed crops and bred high quality horses and cattle, as they did in the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky. East Tennessee had more subsistence farmers and few slaveholders.
During the early years of state formation, there was support for emancipation of slaves, founded in part on fears by whites of competition with slave labor (who could be hired out) in the middle and eastern parts of the state. At the constitutional convention of 1796, free Negroes were given the right to vote if they met residency and property requirements. Efforts to abolish slavery were defeated at this convention and again at the convention of 1834. The convention of 1834 also marked the state's retraction of suffrage for most free African Americans. By then slaveholding had expanded markedly in the state, especially in the Mississippi Delta where cotton planters held large groups of enslaved African Americans, often numbering in the hundreds.

Chick culling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chick culling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Prior to the development of modern meat breeds, most male chickens (cockerels) would usually be slaughtered for meat, while females (pullets) would be kept for egg production. However, once farmers bred separate meat and egg breeds, it became apparent that there was no reason to keep males of the egg breed alive. As a result the males of every 'batch' of egg-laying chickens would be killed as soon as possible to reduce losses incurred by the breeder through the feeding and sheltering of them. Special techniques were developed to accurately determine the sex of chicks at as young an age as possible.

[edit]The culling of unwanted chicks

In industrial factory farms, chicks that are not intended for rearing are culled shortly aftertheir sex is determined, usually before they are 72 hours old.

[edit]Methods

Several methods have been used to cull chicks:
  • Maceration, using a large high-speed grinder into which the chicks are fed.
  • Gases or gas mixtures, often carbon dioxide is used to induce unconsciousness and then death.
  • Cervical dislocation, manually induced dislocation of the spinal column from the skull.
  • Electrocution, a new method that has been touted as being cheap, reliable, and humane by its developers [1]

[edit]Recommended culling practices

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends cervical dislocation andasphyxiation by carbon dioxide as the best options, but has recently amended their guidelines to include maceration.[2]
The 2005-2006 American Veterinary Medical Association Executive Board held its final meeting July 13 in Honolulu, prior to the 2006 session of the House of Delegates and the AVMA Annual Convention. It proposed a policy change, which was recommended by the Animal Welfare Committee on disposal of unwanted chicks, poults, and pipped eggs. The new policy states, in part, "Unwanted chicks, poults, and pipped eggs should be killed by an acceptable humane method, such as use of a commercially designed macerator that results in instantaneous death. Smothering unwanted chicks or poults in bags or containers is not acceptable. Pips, unwanted chicks, or poults should be killed prior to disposal. A pipped egg, or pip, is one where the chick or poult has not been successful in escaping the egg shell during the hatching process."[3]

[edit]Controversy

Animal rights activists maintain that many of the current practices surrounding chicken slaughtering are unethical.[4] Along with the keeping of hens in battery cages, chick culling is the main reason eggs are avoided by vegans.[5]

Guillain-Barré Syndrome and the flu shot

Guillain-Barré Syndrome:

'via Blog this'
No one knows yet what causes GBS or why it affects some people and not others. GBS is called a syndrome because, like irritable bowel syndrome or other syndromes, doctors diagnose it based on a collection of symptoms.

(But it is a known side effect of the flu shot.)

What causes GBS?

Many things can cause GBS; about two-thirds of people who develop GBS symptoms do so several days or weeks after they have been sick with diarrhea or a respiratory illness. Infection with the bacterium Campylobacter jejuni is one of the most common risk factors for GBS. People also can develop GBS after having the flu or other infections (such as cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr virus). On very rare occasions, they may develop GBS in the days or weeks after getting a vaccination.

According to this video, most cases of flu shot related GBS are not reported by doctors and hospitals to the government.

What happened in 1976 with GBS and the swine flu vaccine?

In 1976 there was a small increased risk of GBS following vaccination with an influenza vaccine made to protect against a swine flu virus. The increased risk was approximately 1 additional case of GBS per 100,000 people who got the swine flu vaccine. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) conducted a thorough scientific review of this issue in 2003 and concluded that people who received the 1976 swine influenza vaccine had an increased risk for developing GBS. Scientists have multiple theories on why this increased risk may have occurred, but the exact reason for this association remains unknown.

In the interest of fairness, Papa John’s representative offered this as its reasoning for why our coverage of the matter should be unpublished, which we’ll share here: “What [Schnatter] said, in response to an investor call, was the company estimated that Obamacare would result in an increased cost to the company of approximately 11 cents to 14 cents per pizza, ‘but our business model and unit economics are about as ideal as you can get for a food company to absorb Obamacare, ergo, we have a high ticket average with extremely high frequency of order counts, millions of pizzas per year.’” The pizza chain appears to be attempting to split hairs as to whether Schnatter claimed he would actually raise prices as a result of ObamaCare, or whether he would simply see his own costs rise and absorb the cost. But the research done by CNN makes clear that ObamaCare will not cause Papa John’s to see a cost increase of any kind, which means that in either case Schnatter’s claim is a false one…

SparkNotes: A Streetcar Named Desire: Themes, Motifs & Symbols:

'via Blog this'
Dependence on Men
A Streetcar Named Desire presents a sharp critique of the way the institutions and attitudes of postwar America placed restrictions on women’s lives. Williams uses Blanche’s and Stella’s dependence on men to expose and critique the treatment of women during the transition from the old to the new South. Both Blanche and Stella see male companions as their only means to achieve happiness, and they depend on men for both their sustenance and their self-image. Blanche recognizes that Stella could be happier without her physically abusive husband, Stanley. Yet, the alternative Blanche proposes—contacting Shep Huntleigh for financial support—still involves complete dependence on men. When Stella chooses to remain with Stanley, she chooses to rely on, love, and believe in a man instead of her sister. Williams does not necessarily criticize Stella—he makes it quite clear that Stanley represents a much more secure future than Blanche does.
For herself, Blanche sees marriage to Mitch as her means of escaping destitution. Men’s exploitation of Blanche’s sexuality has left her with a poor reputation. This reputation makes Blanche an unattractive marriage prospect, but, because she is destitute, Blanche sees marriage as her only possibility for survival. When Mitch rejects Blanche because of Stanley’s gossip about her reputation, Blanche immediately thinks of another man—the millionaire Shep Huntleigh—who might rescue her. Because Blanche cannot see around her dependence on men, she has no realistic conception of how to rescue herself. Blanche does not realize that her dependence on men will lead to her downfall rather than her salvation. By relying on men, Blanche puts her fate in the hands of others.

Summary: Marx died after publishing a first volume of this massive book, after which his benefactor Engels edited and published two additional volumes that Marx had drafted. Das Kapital forces the round peg of capitalism into the square hole of Marx’s materialistic theory of history, portraying capitalism as an ugly phase in the development of human society in which capitalists inevitably and amorally exploit labor by paying the cheapest possible wages to earn the greatest possible profits. Marx theorized that the inevitable eventual outcome would be global proletarian revolution. He could not have predicted 21st Century America: a free, affluent society based on capitalism and representative government that people the world over envy and seek to emulate.

Um...excuse me? Are we living in the same America?

'via Blog this'It took many years for scientists to convince the priests to attach a lightning rod to the spire of St. Bride's Church in London, even though it had been destroyed by lightning several times.
The priests' refusals prompted the following letter from the president of Harvard University to Franklin: "How astonishing is the force of prejudice even in an age of so much knowledge and free inquiry. It is amazing to me, that after the full demonstration you have given . . . they should even think of repairing that steeple without such conductors."
In Austria, the Church of Rosenburg was struck so frequently and with such loss of life that the peasants feared to attend services. Several times the spire had to be rebuilt. It was not until 1778, 26 years after Franklin's discovery, that church authorities finally permitted a rod to be attached. Then all trouble ceased.

'via Blog this'Here, Mr. Tobey engaged in a silent, peaceful protest using the text of our Constitution—he was well within the ambit of First Amendment protections. And while it is tempting to hold that First Amendment rights should acquiesce to national security in this instance, our Forefather Benjamin Franklin warned against such a temptation by opining that those ‘who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.’ We take heed of his warning and are therefore unwilling to relinquish our First Amendment protections—even in an airport.

“Now remember, the goal is that these women have to be independent,” Swanson said on a show devoted to the idea that rising college costs were contributing to an alleged spike in prostitution. “The goal is lots and lots of birth control. The goal is lots and lots and lots of fornication. The goal is abortion. The day-after pill will help. And it will help a lot. Remember, the goal is to get that girl a job because she needs no stinkin’ husband, she’s got the fascist corporation and government-mandated insurance programs and socialist welfare that will take care of her womb to tomb. Who needs a cotton-pickin’ husband? Who needs a family? That’s pretty much the worldview that’s dominating, my friends. That’s what the college is all about.”

Because I happen to agree with Freud’s naughtiest disciple, Wilhelm Reich, who argued that a true political revolution would only be possible once sexual repression was overthrown, which pretty much rules out the Tea Party as a true political revolution because, boy, is that a movement that needs to get laid.

Nutley Man Among Those Charged in $10 Million Mortgage Fraud - Belleville-Nutley Patch, NJ Patch

Nutley Man Among Those Charged in $10 Million Mortgage Fraud - Belleville-Nutley Patch, NJ Patch:

'via Blog this'A man who has addresses in Nutley and Lyndhurst was among nine New Jersey residents charged in connection with an alleged mortgage fraud scheme that defrauded financial institutions of $10 million over several years, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced Thursday.
FBI agents arrested the defendants Thursday morning and charged them with one count each of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Each defendant faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of $1 million if convicted, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release.
The defendants allegedly "engaged in multiple mortgage fraud conspiracies" involving more than 15 properties in and around Newark and Elizabeth from March 2008 to July 2012, authorities said.
They are accused of taking control of properties through fraudulent short sale transactions and identity theft, and submitting false mortgage loan documents to obtain loan proceeds for their own financial gain. The defendants also obtained money through sales to straw buyers, authorities allege.
In some instances, the defendants allegedly misrepresented where funds to purchase properties were coming from, submitted inflated appraisal reports to get bigger loans, and formed limited liability companies with names similar to those of licensed title companies in order to perpetrate the alleged frauds, investigators said.
The defendants were identified as
  • Jose Luis Salguero Bedoya, also known as Jose Salguero, 36, of Elizabeth and Verona
  • Paul Chemidlin, Jr., 41, of Morganville
  • Delio Coutinho, 50, of Colonia
  • Joseph DiValli, 44, of Jackson
  • Christopher Ju, 26, of East Brunswick
  • Carmine Fusco, 44, of East Hanover
  • Jose Martins, 31, of Newark
  • Yazmin Soto-Cruz, also known as Yazmin Soto, 32, of Elizabeth
  • Kenneth Sweetman, 32, of Lyndhurst and Nutley
The news release outlines the various roles the defendants allegedly played in the scheme:
Salguero was a real estate investor who, along with his girlfriend, Soto, provided much of the funds used by the defendants to perpetuate their fraudulent schemes. Coutinho was a loan officer at a Northern New Jersey mortgage brokerage company; he submitted false documents in support of the schemes. Chemidlin provided fraudulent real estate appraisals for the defendants although he was not a licensed real estate appraiser. DiValli was a loan officer at a Northern New Jersey mortgage brokerage company who also submitted false documents in support of the schemes. Ju negotiated the fraudulent short sale real estate transactions. Fusco and Sweetman conducted fraudulent real estate closings for the defendants although they were not licensed attorneys or title agents. Martins was a bank employee who facilitated certain financial transactions for the defendants.
They were scheduled for initial appearances and bail hearings Thursday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Dickson in Newark.
Fishman credited law enforcement agents of the FBI Newark Mortgage Fraud Task Force for the investigation leading to the charges, and thanked several agencies for their work on the investigation. He said the case was brought in coordination with President Barack Obama’s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force.
