"One of the guards has been quoted as saying that it “wasn’t his job” to save her.  Not only that, it has been revealed that the guards were ordered to ignore her until she “stopped breathing”.

She was a normal child who rebelled a bit as a teenager and as a result was drugged and put into the system to the point where she was detached and suicidal.
Sadly, there are countless children and adults suffering through this same situation, primarily as a result of public school and the insane standards of conformity that are placed onto children, as well as the drugging and institutionalization that comes as a result of their inevitable rebellion.
This also brings to light the need for a more humane approach to mental health.
On an even deeper level, it shows us the psychological brutality that has overcome so many people who earn their living through inflicting violence on others.
“Insisted he was just doing the job he was given and following orders to videotape.  In a perfect world, Burnett testified earlier, he would intervene to try to save a life but in the correctional world, it’s a different story.
“If an order is given to me and I don’t agree with it, there’s a grievance procedure,” he said at one point Tuesday.”

Following protocol is more important to these people than a human life, of course, that is not to say that all mental health workers are this callous, but it is certainly a systematic problem which is built upon the illusion of authority.
For more information on this concept and the research behind it, look into the Milgram Experiment and the Stanford Prison Experiment."
