Indian mother jailed in Britain for killing son who 'failed to memorise Quran' | Deccan Chronicle:

'via Blog this'London: Indian-born woman Sara Ege was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment for a minimum of 17 years for murdering her seven-year-old son and perverting the course of justice.

Thirty-three-year-old Sara Ege, who had been convicted of murdering her son Yaseen in December, was sentenced at Cardiff crown court on Monday. The jury at the same court had found her guilty of treating Yaseen like a 'dog' and brutally beating him with a stick for failing to memorise the Quran. Yaseen died in July 2010 from internal injuries caused by months of beatings by his mother.

The judge referred to the campaign of violence that Sara had unleashed on the young boy.

“The violence that you perpetrated on your son was not confined to one day. I am satisfied that, over three months, you beat him on a number of occasions, often with a wooden pestle. His injuries must have caused him a good deal of pain. In my judgment Yaseen was subjected to prolonged cruelty,” Justice Wyn Williams said in the judgment.

Sara, a mathematics graduate from India, had confessed to her son’s murder to the police a few weeks after his death, which was recorded on video. However, she retracted her confession and blamed her taxi driver husband Yousef for their son’s murder and claimed that she lived in fear of her husband and his family.

The jury, however, had found her guilty and cleared her husband of causing the death of the child by failing to protect him.

The South Wales police welcomed the sentence.

“Throughout this investigation we have heard many tributes to Yaseen. Quiet, hard-working, bright, well-behaved, obedient, respectful, polite, smiley - are just some of the words used to describe Yaseen by those who knew him. It is a tragedy that such a promising young life was taken away in such disturbing circumstances and that those who knew him will not have the opportunity to see him grow up to become a young man,” police spokesperson Kim Roche said.
