“It looked just like Best Buy’s website,” Gaby said. “But it wasn’t” — a fact she did not fully realize until after filling out an electronic form with her email, address, phone number and birth date. After submitting the information, Gaby was taken to a site advertising a way to receive text messages from a celebrity— for a fee.
“As soon as I went to the next page my phone started getting all these texts,” Gaby said. “We realized then that probably we’d been had.”
A call to the closest Best Buy revealed that she wasn’t the only one who had received a similar offer. Gaby said the store confirmed receiving numerous calls offering similar fake prizes. A post on Best Buy’s technical support site by a GeekSquad representative, in answer to a user who received a similar offer, confirms the offers are not legitimate. Best Buy’s official website ishttp://www.bestbuy.com/. Any web address containing clicks4card or similar language before a store’s official name should not be trusted, officials say.
Being contacted as a winner in a sweepstakes or contest that was never entered is a good indication of a scam, according to the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs. The department also recommends contacting any company to ensure that a contest is legitimate when the notification is in an email.
After Gaby submitted her email address, she began receiving emails claiming she had applied for credit with various companies.
“I don’t know what they can do; they don’t have my Social Security number. I don’t know what they can do with the information I gave them, but it’s just about driven me crazy thinking what they can do,” Gaby said.
