Houston artist/architect/entrepreneur Henri Klok, who has dabbled in everything from real estate to cookies in the last 10 years, published the first of three editions of the Great Houston Board Game in 1991.
Now he's working on a Texas game and a national game, and he's looking for European markets for a game with make-believe businesses called the Great America Board Game.
Klok doesn't like to compare his game to Monopoly, which he believes is flawed because it doesn't have a proper ending. "This one has an ending, and you can come from behind and win at the last minute."
(Klok notes that Monopoly players who rack up the green, yellow and orange property squares early are mathematically most likely to get ahead and stay ahead, because of the frequency with which players land on those squares and pay rent.)
Klok's game features not one but three rings of squares, and players trade in local businesses like Texaco, Browning-Ferris, the Laff Stop and Esquire Fine Cleaners.
The game is published through a company called Four Star Promotions.
The Great Houston Board Game retails for $29.95 and is available at Wal-Mart, Oshman's Sporting Goods and other, smaller stores.
HoustonOpoly, the spare-time creation of Irving food broker Era Lee Hamilton, is less bashful about its resemblance to the Parker Bros. parlor game, which is now owned by national toymaker Hasbro.
Hamilton, who publishes HoustonOpoly through a company called Creative Diversions, rolled out her Houston game last fall in local businesses like Dave & Buster's, Pappas restaurants and Paper Etc. She's sold out the first printing of 3,600 and is doing a second printing.
Earlier she published DallasOpoly and Fort WorthOlopy, selling a combined 30,000 games since 1989. Now she's working on a Dallas-Fort Worth SportsOpoly.
HoustonOpoly usually retails for about $19.95, and Hamilton donates 50 cents a game to Houston's Sunshine Kids, which organizes activities for kids with cancer.
Late for the Sky Production Co. of Cincinnati, named after a dreary Jackson Browne ballad, has offered Aggieopoly and Texasopoly since 1987, featuring campus buildings and local student haunts at A&M and the University of Texas-Austin that players can buy and sell just as they sell real estate on the Monopoly board.
