Abu Dhabi: Five Asian men charged with human trafficking were referred to court by the General Prosecution yesterday.
The men are accused of kidnapping two Asian women of different nationalities and taking them against their will from the capital, to Dubai, to use them as prostitutes in a sex trade.
Investigations have shown that the two victims who initially met at a shopping centre began to live together after one of them absconded from her sponsor. The absconder was allegedly kidnapped after leaving her work place.
The suspects then went to the first victim’s house impersonating CID officers and told her male friend, whom she was living with, that they had come to arrest her for stealing Dh1,000. One e of the victims was taken to Dubai from there where she was sold for Dh2,500 to be used as a prostitute.
The victim was then found in Dubai at a brothel along with 23 other men and women from various Asian nationalities, where she was found not to have engaged in any sexual activities in the apartment.
The second victim was arrested later on account of not having a valid visa and not working for a sponsor. She said in a statement that she was left on an Abu Dhabi highway after the suspects tried to sell her but failed.
A source at the General Prosecutors’ Office in Abu Dhabi has expressed the country’s vehement opposition to such behaviour and highlighted the UAE law that considers human trafficking a crime which could lead to life inprison.
