A central Alberta Mountie convicted of criminal harassment, extortion and mortgage fraud could face an RCMP misconduct hearing.

Const. Hoa Dong La was convicted on Friday in a Red Deer court on charges related to properties he and family members had purchased.

An RCMP spokeswoman says a board to deal with the misconduct won't convene until after La's criminal sentencing and a possible appeal.

Sgt. Patricia Neely says RCMP policy allows for members to be dismissed without a hearing if they are given jail time, so a lot is riding on La's sentence June 6.

La has been suspended with full pay for more than five years from his job with the RCMP's passport and immigration section in Calgary.

Court heard he used the trappings of his office, including his uniform, his weapon and his police car, to instil fear in his tenants.  (Red Deer Advocate, The Canadian Press, twd)
