JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found in a recent survey that there have been at least 176 human sex-trafficking cases in northeast Tennessee in the past two years.
Yvonne Williams, executive director of the Tennesseechapter of Trafficking in America Task Force, presented the data to dispel myths about human trafficking and raise community awareness during a seminar Friday inJohnson City.
Williams told The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/HuqzST) that while the crowd was sparse, she hopes those who came took away information that can help them prevent trafficking in their communities.
"Most of the time we go into a new area, the crowd is sparse. The people who were there got the information and it sparks them to go out and do what they need to do," she said after the event.

She said that most victims who are forced into prostitution are about the age of 12 or 13. Most people are victimized in their own communities. Trafficking victims are also not just females, Williams said.

The survey by the TBI was conducted among hundreds of agencies including law enforcement, social service organizations, the Department of Children's Services and judges. It found that 68 percent of Tennesseecounties reported at least one human trafficking case in the last two years.
