Snoopy's Hot Dog's and Steve Webb, Proud To be An Island

'via Blog this'A longtime Raleigh business owner is helping Republicans fan the controversy surrounding a widely-circulated comment that was plucked from a campaign speech by President Barack Obama in downtown Roanoke, Va. on July 13.
Snoopy's hot dog grill, a Raleigh fixture since 1978, is now at the center of a national political debate. At least on Twitter, anyway.
The Republican National Committee, Arizona Republican Party and even a Mitt Romney campaign consultant retweeted a photo of a Snoopy's sign in Wake Forest that takes issue with President Barack Obama's recent speech about business owners.
Steve Webb, the owner, wrote on his marquee: "Mr. Obama, I did create this business."
Snoopy's is proud of its tradition as a local, family-owned and operated food stand.
(Pride, you know what they say about that.)
The Snoopy's at 600 Hillsborough St. and Glenwood Ave. opened in 1990 with partner, Alan Rogers.  In 2003, the 3600 Hillsborough St. Snoopy's opened, located near Meredith College and Gorman St. The Webb's son, Troy Beal, returned to the business at that time and headed store operations.  Snoopy's welcomed Larry & Casey Cerilli as partners in the 600 Hillsborough St. Store in 2006.  Snoopy's fourth store opened in 2007 in the Pavillion Shopping Center at the intersection of Atlantic Ave. and Spring Forest Rd. In 2008, Troy left Snoopy's to open his own restaurant in Wilmington, and the Cerillis are now head of operations and partners in all four Snoopy's.  In August of 2010, the fifth Snoopy's opened at 82-101 Glen Rd., just off the intersection of I-40 and Hwy. 42 at exit 312.

Snoopy's began in 1978 when Steve Webb, a long time Raleigh native and local entrepreneur, decided to convert an old gas station on the corner of Wake Forest Road and Whitaker Mill into an eastern N.C. grill.
It became instantly popular with customers who lined up for made to order hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and piping hot French fries.  Speedy service has been a hallmark of Snoopy's.

Over the years, Snoopy's has used the marquee sign on Wake Forest Rd to feature specials, comment on local and current events, or share humorous sayings.   Fun events in the past have included a pet look-alike contest, and Fourth of July hot dog eating contests.  Snoopy's has also participated in Raleigh's annual Christmas Day Parade since 2004.

The hot dogs are always good, but I find the staff at this location to be perpetually rude and short with you, even when they're the ones who get your order wrong. I also prefer the one on Wake Forest Rd.

We love Snoopy's hot dogs and have eaten plenty over the years! However, the last few months they have too much mustard on them, they stick to the paper and the buns are stale. So, today, I tried the chicken salad sandwich ( at $4.15 it is expensive now). The bread was stale, the lettuce wilted and turning brown, but the biggest disappointment was that the chicken salad itself was SWEET, very sweet, like it was full of sweet and low. I don't know why they are monkeying around with the recipes but no need to have the qualtiy of freshness disappear too. Will go back to the Wake Forest rd location and see if they do better, forget Hillsborough street, burned too many times lately!!!

        • Bill Jacobs He should look up infrastructure too....that's what Obama meant.......the roads the people took to get to your business .........ass!!!!

        • Kimberly Crane It takes a village to raise a business.
        • Brian Holler He also needs to understand how to use a comma, but that's besides the point and par for the course from an idiot like this. No one and I repeat, NO ONE, has ever built a business on their own. In fact, you can argue that no one has ever achieved anything completely on their own. There are exceptions, but they are far from the norm. Context, indeed.

No man is an island

Meaning

Human beings do not thrive when isolated from others. Donne was a Christian but this concept is shared by other religions, principally Buddhism.

Origin

No man is an island - John DonneThis is a quotation from John Donne (1572-1631). It appears in Devotions upon emergent occasions and seuerall steps in my sicknes - Meditation XVII, 1624:
"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon, calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come: so this bell calls us all: but how much more me, who am brought so near the door by this sickness....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
