'via Blog this'LAFAYETTE, La. - A mortgage broker from Texas has been sentenced in Louisiana to more than a year in federal prison for defrauding lenders.

U.S. District Judge Richard Haik in Lafayette sentenced 50-year-old Mary Francois, former owner of America's Best Mortgage and Creative Solutions of St. Martinville, on Wednesday to 14 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Francois, who now lives in Humble, Texas, received commissions on loans that she obtained for clients. Federal prosecutors say she submitted false documentation to lending institutions to obtain loans for people who otherwise wouldn't be eligible.

Prosecutors say Francois received more than $153,000 from the scheme.
