A PROPERTY buyer has been convicted of a £2.5m mortgage fraud and faces the prospect of a prison sentence today.
A jury unanimously found Jason Omar guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud at Teesside Crown Court.
Omar, 41, who denied the charge, and Angelique Huggett, 45, who has admitted it, will be sentenced in the week starting April 22.
Mum-of-three Huggett is already in prison after she was exposed as a major player in a £1m drugs ring.
The court has heard how Omar, of Church Lane, Ormesby, Middlesbrough, and Huggett, of Dishforth Close, Thornaby, fraudulently built up a substantial buy-to-let portfolio.
The pair bought a large number of properties in Middlesbrough using mortgages and re-mortgages.
Two other men who denied the charge - solicitor Desmond McCarthy and broker Paul Bradwell - have been cleared by the jury.
McCarthy, 69, of Anchorage Mews, Thornaby, was acquitted on Judge Howard Crowson’s direction in the middle of the two-week trial.
Bradwell, 53, of Meadowgate Drive, Hartlepool, was found not guilty at the end of the trial yesterday.
